SID President’s Visit to Malawi

The President of Southern Africa Indian-Ocean Division, Dr Harrington Simui Akombwa arrived in Blantyre Malawi, the Warm Heart of Africa on the 11th of July  2023 for a five-day visit. He was welcomed at the Chileka Airport by the Malawi Union Conference President, pastor Tony Nyirenda, his Officers, and Departmental Directors.

Dr Akombwa then inspected the Guard of honor mounted by the Pathfinders, before he was driven to the Mayor’s office, where he met the mayor of Blantyre, His Worship Wild Ndipo at his offices. He was then given the opportunity to sign the visitors’ book and given the Freedom of the city of Blantyre. Addressing the gathering, the Mayor commended the work being done by the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Malawi, especially in the fields of education and health. In the evening, the Division President Dr Akombwa, addressed dozens of church members at Kanjedza SDA Church, where he challenged the church members to get ready in preparing for Jesus Christ’s  Second Coming.

Day two of the Southern Africa-Indian Ocean Division President’s visit to Malawi saw him visit Blantyre Adventist Hospital, where he conducted the morning devotion for Blantyre Adventist hospital staff. Shortly after the morning devotion, the CEO for Blantyre Adventist hospital Mr. Kirby Kasinje then narrated the history of Blantyre Adventist hospital, which has become a household name in the medical health corridors in Malawi. The leaders were then taken around the entire Blantyre Adventist hospital premises which has seen big names in government being assisted in terms of health care.

An exciting development at Blantyre Adventist hospital, is their new Oxygen Plant which was established during the height of Covid 19 pandemic in 2021. The hospital has state of the art equipment, and they produce their own oxygen, thereby saving over $35 000.00 every month. This oxygen plant is housed on the same block with the hospital and very convenient for the patients. From the Oxygen plant, the leaders were taken to the Blantyre Dental clinic. The Division President, Dr Harrington Akombwa was so impressed by the high-class dental clinic facilities which has not just top dentists, but has also the best dental equipment in the country, with professional missionary dentists from Philippines. Dr Akombwa and the Blantyre Adventist Hospital CEO Mr. Kirby Kasinje believes that their facilities and the state-of-the-art equipment is not far from other international Adventist hospitals around the world.

From Blantyre Adventist hospital, the Division President visited the Malawi South Conference, where he met the leaders and the staff members. Dr Akombwa thanked the Conference leaders for the work there are doing, especially the encouraging membership statistics. “Your membership as a Conference is now over 400 000 baptized members and you are contributing to the current SID Membership of over 4.1 million baptized members. Continue to point others to Christ, so that Jesus can come back and take us home soon.”

From Blantyre, Dr Harrington Akombwa accompanied by the Union President, Pastor Tony Nyirenda headed north to Lilongwe the capital city of Malawi. On his way to Lilongwe, the delegation passed through Malawi Adventist University (MAU), where he addressed the staff and the students. MAU as it is affectionately known, is an Adventist university with a rainbow of nationalities coming from 11 countries. Addressing the students and the staff, the Division President challenged the students to keep the SDA education flag high and to continue to strive for integrity and excellence, as they pursue their studies. The vice chancellor of Malawi Adventist University Mrs. Beit, said she was humbled to receive the Division President as their special guest and pledged that MAU will continue to produce high quality students, who will be great ambassadors for Christ.
